Re: PHASE 1V
What do you reckon to the XA GT on the cover of the the current AMC that allegedly got a Phase 4 motor? The owner didn't order it, didn't know he had it, and didn't like it when he had it. The fact that the dealership didn't know how to work on it and thought it ws faulty tells me that's why Ford didn't stick built Phase 4 motors in XAs. There was another magazine with an RPO83 that supposedly had a Phase 4 motor in it, but it had a casting date on the block later than the Phase 4 was cancelled. I suspect the motor in the AMC car was put in later and was just "to spec" and not a factory build.
Re: PHASE 1V
Sorry havent seen latest amc gave up reading wrong or poorly researched stories. The phase 4 engine would not have been any harder to service than the phase3. In race conditions it still had oil pressure issues even with winged sump. In story done on phase 4 sport car world & wheels 1972 there is a great pic of phase 4 test engine on stand with massive winged sump. Also shows only 2 raceworks phase4 cars the other one would have been doing major track testing & latter given to Hoddo for rallying it also recieved the 4 bolt block for 1973 rally season. Cheers pk

Re: PHASE 1V
Well bought a copy of latest amc & read the article on rpo 83 plus..... Best laugh ive had for awhile. 4 bolt block yeah right then twisting Colin Russell words as if phase 4 had these. Lot6 ran 4 bolt blocks for the 2 super falcons only till 1973 then they were fitted to all racing falcons also they were avaiable to buy from Ford as most parts from phase 4 could be bought wing sump etc from 74. Lot6 had a pile of stuffed 4 bolt blocks out back from super falcons spitting rods. Fact is phase 4 was not going to be fitted with them Hoddos rally phase4 was fitted with 4 bolt block as they were free to do so under rally rules. His spare 4 bolt block was not from XA 1 Paul Carthew owns now. Cheers pk.
Re: PHASE 1V
The story didn't ring true to me at all. A bloke at work reckons he has an XA GT hardtop with a factory Phase 4 motor, and "you can have it for $80k, mate". There must be others claiming the same.
Re: PHASE 1V
Is his so called phase4 motor complete with 4 bolt block ? You have to laugh at these so called phantom phase 4s popping up. Cheers pk
Re: PHASE 1V
Yes, factory 4-bolt. He says it's one of the first XA hardtops and he's the 2nd owner, and he insists it was factory-fitted with the Phase 4 motor.

Re: PHASE 1V
Will try & post some more articles from 1972 wheels mag on works Phase 4 tomorrow Cheers pete.
Re: PHASE 1V
Now we all know this photo but most thought it was taken before the Phase4 project was cancelled last week of June 1972 but in fact it was taken just after XA-1 & XA-3 arrived at Lot 6 12th of June 1972, The photo of just two cars was taken the last week of June afew days before the axe fell .Now there are some unique features on the cars that i will try to show. but back to the photo of only 2 cars at this late date where is the 3rd car quite simply its being track tested dont forget FSV had gone from the XY to a whole new model in the XA so they needed a test mule and XA-3 was completed first so all the new parts for the Phase 4 needed to be tested and Ford had a strike on earlier in 1972 which delayed things , where with the Phase 3 they could walk their to be race car down the assemble line they didnt have this luxury in 1972 so all the phase 4 goodies had to be put on to the works cars at FSV Lot 6, So which 2 cars are in the late photo with only 2 cars The one with the most work done to it is XA-2 In this photo you can see 2 unique items that belonged to this car the fire extinguisher bottle & the drivers side remote side mirror adjuster, also in following photo the 2 clips holding the boot wire which was stated by one of the owners of this car was a unique feature as the other 2 cars only have one .
Re: PHASE 1V
the 2 clips holding boot wiring on XA-2 . Now the other car next to XA-2 well its plain to see XA-1 has been moved to the position where XA-3 was . Its plain to see that its least developed car still has its original wheels on even its dress caps are in place . Another item of great interest have a look behind & below rear wheel sill note the mud this can be seen on this car XA-1 in both photos ie early photo with all 3 cars and in the pic showing the 2 cars late June , XA-3 also has mud in this spot which would indicate that these 2 XA-1 & XA-3 were delivered together 12th June 1972 and XA-2 10th May 1972 and in both photos in was in exactly the same spot. please feel free to ask question or tell me is not correct , hope this clears the confusion created by all the so called car mags getting it right . Cheers Pete.
Re: PHASE 1V
another photo worth showing check out the size of the winged sump on engine stand on quizzing the mechanics that worked at Lot 6 only one would say that it was a test engine. Clearly they still had oil pressure problems . And another photo of interest .In far right we can see XA-1 with its bonnet full up right this shows that it had race engine installed and worked on as Graeme Stewart (auto Electrician) at Lot6 said he was put under pressure to finish all 3 race cars but he had to wait till the race engines were installed to do his job, so yes all 3 cars had their race engines installed and no 4 bolt blocks.. and of greater interest the test mule XY note the 2 levers on right wheel arch in boot to change camber ? And the thin piping its not roll cage could it be some sort of remote oiling system ?

Re: PHASE 1V
Great post! Thanks for that detail! I still haven't seen any Phase 4 with the stickers on it that David Bowden claims his had in period.
I've asked Classics to consider doing a Phase 4 in plain red, as in these photos.....
